Processing of Silk/Cotton Blends in Short Staple Ring Spinning System - Some Studies

Introduction

Silk fibre is known for its strength, fineness, lustre and elasticity. The technology of production of spun silk yarn from waste silk involves a long sequence of machines. The operations involved in the process are degumming, opening, filling, combing, carding, drawing, roving and spinning. Some research workers have attempted to spin silk on the woollen and waste spinning systems. Spun silk yarns are used for manufacturing various dress materials and household items that have good aesthetic value. Cotton fabrics are also used for apparels and home textiles due to their comfort characteristics. Hence, blending of silk with cotton and manufacturing of blended yarns and fabrics will have both aesthetic value as well as comfort characteristics.

There has been a great demand for silk blended fabrics in recent years, due to increased price of raw silk.

Therefore, a study has been carried out at SITRA with the following objectives:

1.      Spinning of silk/cotton blended yarns in short staple spinning systems

2.      Evaluation of quality attributes of silk/cotton blended yarns

3.      Assessment of handle and comfort properties of silk/cotton fabrics

Physical Characteristics of Cotton / Polyester Air-jet Core Spun Yarn

Abstract

Manufacture of yarn from Polyester- cotton core yarn is one of the most important developments in textile Industry. Use of core yarns is mainly aimed to improve the strength, comfort, durability, aesthetic and other functional properties of the final yarn. The article reports the results of investigation on core spun yarns made from polyester filament as core and cotton as sheath material.

Polyester filaments with different proportions were chosen for the core component and cotton at sheath total six different core yarns were made and results were compared with 100% cotton Ring Spun yarn.

It is observed that core yarns are having improved physical properties over that of 100% cotton ring spun yarn.

Introduction

Core yarn structure consists of two components, one of which forms the center axis or core of the yarn and other is the covering. Continuous multifilament yarn generally used as a core while cotton staple fibers are used for covering the filaments or used as sheath material.

Core spun yarn shows some improved characteristics over 100% spun staple yarn on 100% filament yarns. To improve the strength and comfort core spun yarn is preferred over blended staple spun yarn. There is a phenomenal improvement of durability & aesthetic property are observed by using core spun yarn. As the cotton is wrapped over polyester filaments improvements are on yarn properties like moisture absorption, heat resistance, air permeability, depth of shed in dyeing. The tensile strength of yarn increases because of presence of Polyester Filament at core, which is the main load carrier.

Soybean Fibers - A Review

Introduction

Soy Protein Fiber (SPF) is the only protein fiber made from soybean cake. Their physical properties are same as that of synthetic fiber. It gives tremendous change in properties like smoothness/luster/comfort/absorbency/strength/shrinkage when mix with other fibers. For example; when soybean fibers mix with cashmere, it gives smooth quality with an enhancement of easy care properties. As a wool/soy protein fiber, it reduces shrinkage and increases ease of care. As a silk blend, it improves the properties of silk with the prevention of the fabric from sticking to the skin when wet.

Inspite of this, SPF is the only renewable botanic protein fiber. Its 16 amino acids are healthy and nutritional to people's skin. This fiber basically comes from soybean; plant massive in sourcing and rich in nutrition. It is a kind of an active fiber shows the superiorities of many natural fibers and synthesized one.

Processability/Pretreatment: SPF has different physical & chemical construction from natural protein fiber. During the production process we should select fit equipment and proper settings:

a)   Desizing: As we know, all textile materials (woven fabric/knitting) require desizing which can further be processed by enzymatic desizing, alkali or oxidative desizing. Mercerization is usually not recommended as SPF is unable to bear the strong caustic soda.

b)   Scouring & Bleaching: As we know, the purpose of using scouring & bleaching is to remove oil, lubricants & pigments. We may use hydrogen peroxide bleaching, reduction bleaching depending upon color. The natural color of SPF is curcuma which is difficult to remove. Hence use of bleaching is recommended for these fibers. In case of very light colors, it is preferable to use whitening agents.

Synthesis: SRF is an advanced textile fiber made from Soybean cake after oiling followed by new bioengineering Technique.

Firstly, protein is distilled from soybean cake & refined.Secondly, Use auxiliary agent & biological enzyme which make changes in the space structure of spherical protein. After that, Protein spinning liquid is confected by adding high polymersThirdly, once the liquid is cook, the 0.9-3 dtex fiber is produced by wet spinning which is further stabilized by acetalizing & then finally cut into short staples after curing and thermoforming.Features: Fabrics from SPF have the following features:

Luster: SPF have the luster of silk with excellent drapeComfort: It is soft, smooth & light weightAbsorbency: They have same moisture absorption as cotton & better moisture transmission than cotton.Easy Dyeing: The original state of the product has good dyeing penetration & colorfastness properties.Strength: They have higher breaking strength than wool, cotton & silk but less than that of polyesterShrinkage: These fibers don't shrink under infaluence of boiling waterEasy Care: These fibers are anti-crease, easy wash & fast drying
